A LOW PEDESTAL GLASS PATEN
Lot 59
A LOW PEDESTAL GLASS PATEN, purportedly from the late 16th century, of plain dished circular form with folded rim and foot, 7 3/4" diameter, with an attached label (c.1907) stating this was found in 1821, hidden together with letters (one addressed to Elizabeth Rookwoode '...my olde friend in God...') in a plastered ceiling in Coldham Hall, Suffolk. Sold in a pine box with a handwritten label (torn and with losses) dated 1907 N.B. Coldham Hall, seat of the Rookwoode family, was built in 1574 and remained in the family until 1869. Ambrose (b.circa 1578) inherited Coldham in 1600, was involved in the Gunpowder plot and executed in 1605. The Rookwoode family continued in the Roman Catholic faith, as shown by the two chapels and several priest holes at Coldham Hall (Est. plus 24% premium inc. VAT)
