Lot 138

AN EDWARDIAN SILVER GOLF CLUB DRIVER by Ellkington & Co., Birmingham 1906, with 'leather bound' grip and unravelling 'string' wirework binding, 45" long, approximately 20ozs (Illustrated) NB Many silver trophies and medals were awarded at this period including silver mounted golf clubs. However, specific records of solid silver golf clubs awarded are scarce. It has been suggested that ten of these full silver clubs were manufactured, probably all by Ekkington as they would have had the cast, and who were (and still are) noted for their high quality craftsmanship. The clubs are said to have been given to the winners of the British Open in the pre-war years. In 1904 Harry Vardon was presented with a silver putter, having won the British Open in 1903.
